The Kenya Arts Gallery 2013
Thank you to the many who emailed us with your response to the first two Kenya Arts Diaries;

“I received one of your diaries as a gift from my Dad… I just love it”

“I have been using your Kenya Art Diary 2011 and it’s awesome… Thank you and please keep educating and making us more aware of our great artists”

“The art proved inspirational…”

“It instills such sense of pride in being Kenyan…”

“Greetings from your number one fan. I have just featured you on my blog”

“Just saw your Diary, love it, where can I buy it..”

Your enthusiastic response to the 2011 and 2012 Kenya Arts Diaries has spurred the creation of this 2013 showcase of Kenyan art. Once again we had more artists than we could accommodate, and this over-abundance of creativity ensures that there will be more diaries to come.

This year you will find photographers and furniture designers alongside painters and sculptors in the diary, as we open our eyes to other forms of visual creativity. Reflecting the world around us, we have also included graffiti artists whose very public murals remind us of the role the arts can play in enlightening and educating the community at large.

The proceeds from the sale of the diary go into a fund for promising young artists, for apprenticeship and internships with established artists in Kenya. The fund is administered by the Kitengela Glass Research and Training Trust in the capable hands of glass artist Nani Croze, whose initiative created the publication you hold in your hands today.

This year’s art selection team comprised Margaretta wa Gacheru, Nani Croze, Judy Ogana and Donna Pido. Once again Peta Meyer played an invaluable role in editing, designing and laying out the diary. Photography was handled by Sylvia Gichia, Lin Qi and Aernout Zevenbergen, all of whose professionalism has enhanced the diary’s visual quality. Printing and distribution was responsibility of Kul Graphics. The GoDown Arts Centre hosted and fed our meetings.

We take this opportunity to thank everyone involved in the creation of this year’s Kenya Arts Diary. It has been a labour of love based on the conviction that amazing art is coming out of Kenya, which deserves the kind of showcase that the diary provides.

We hope that as you list your daily appointments and record your thoughts in the 2013 Kenya Arts Diary, it will give you much pleasure to witness the unfolding progress and creative development of Kenya’s contemporary art scene.
