Forward of the fifth Kenya Arts Diary
Our Kenya Arts Diary (KAD), has now reached the ripe age of 5 years. A difficult, yet exciting age for children, as well as diaries! I am grateful to the old guard of volunteers who have gone, and to others who have joined because the diary continues.
I t is amazing to find yet again so many new artists, both young and old. Againour Margaretta wa Gacheru, illustrious Arts Correspondent for Nation Media Group, has been a guide to find most of the new artists; our sincere Thanks go to her.
Annie Eagleton, enthusiastic, overworked newly recruited friend, slotting into what was Peta Meyer’s job as coordinator, makes us realize what a complex task it is to compile 70 artists’ work.
Sylvia Gichui of Kuona Trust, continued with her advice, help and encouragement and also took many o the photos of both artists and artwork, as did our ‘old faithful’, Qi Lin. Some photos were also taken by Kuona Trust photographic artist, Joel Lukhovi, Qi Lin, Oscar Mann and Margaretta.
The Kul Graphics team battled with deadlines as they designed the covers and contents of the diary. We are also grateful to Nyandia Lamawe who contributed to the cover design. Ogana of GoDown gave us help as needed. Diana Maigwa has done a marvelous job promoting and distributing of our Diary. We could not do without her.
Our beloved father-figure, Eric Krystall has once again constructed the artists’ biographies. And we cannot forget our respected publisher, Kul Bhakoo, who has brought this collaborative creation to print. Our heartfelt gratitude goes out to him.
And last but not least, the young artist residency programme has been sponsored again by KAD with help from the whole KAD team. This year we are happy to announce that Kezia Nduta, a promising young Kenyan artist has been selected to participate in our programme.
Through the Kenyan Art scene and our wonderful artists we can reflect on the soothe the present turbulent times in Kenya.
