FOREWORD
We welcome you to celebrate the 10th Anniversary Edition of the Kenya Arts Diary.
It has been ten years since the first edition went to press in 2011 after which the Kenya Arts Diary (Nani Croze’s brainchild) became a series in which emerging and established artists, art centres, galleries, corporate and non-corporate sponsors have sought to he featured. Over the year s, the Diary has gained a following, not only as a “diary” but also as a Kenyan contemporary art catalogue and beautiful, timeless means of preserving selected artworks which have been unique to each edition.
The selection of artists in this edition — Kenya Arts Diary 2020 — has deviated from a careful choice of artworks focused on presenting some of the finest new works by mainly up-and-coming Kenyan and East African artists. We are also fortunate to include works by a number of established artists who have helped to build the burgeoning art scene that is emerging in Kenya today. We have also sought to select artworks not only for their quality but for their diversity of background.
Since its inception, the Diary has profiled and acted as a springboard for nearly 700 different artists, many of whom are now considered established professionals whose art is prized both among local and international collectors.
This 10th edition also reflects the rapid growth of the Kenyan art scene, which is also visible in the proliferation of galleries that exhibit African Art. The first ones in Kenya played an important role in promoting the arts. They include pioneering art spaces like Paa Ya Paa, Gallery Watatu, Nairobi National Museum, One Off, RaMoMa, African Heritage and Kitengela Glass among others. They have been joined by an array of art centres, galleries and artists collectives including the GoDown, Banana Hill, Maasai Mbili, Circle Art, Red Hill, Kuona Artist Collective, Brush Tu, the Attic, the Art Space, Polka Dot, Bonzo Art, Kobo Trust, Studio Soko and countless others countrywide. These are a clear sign of growth and success in the field of Arts in Kenya.
We are proud be to associated with that growth and success of the East African creative economy as reflected in the increasing appreciation and value of art. We hope this Diary and previous editions have inspired you to support the creative industry or to explore your own art skills.
As we pay tribute to those who have left us along the way, we thank the contributing artists who featured in one or more previous KAD editions. We also wish to thank the advertisers, sponsors, and all the KAD team members, both post and present, who have taken this journey with us.
The 10th Anniversary Edition would never have seen the light of day without the support of my husband, Dr. Eric Krystall who continues to be wholly supportive of the Diary. I also want to thank others who have contributed immensely to the Diary’s success over the years. including Margaretta Wa Gacheru, Lyne Were, Anastasia Mirzoyants, KAD’s original designer Peta Meyer and Diana Maigwa. our master marketer (Stormsky Graphics Ltd). Others who have been extremely helpful include Kul Bhakoo and Atufa Cocker for designing and publishing the Diary at Kul Graphics, Lydia Galavu of the Kenya National Museum, Dion Koigi and the Heinrich Boll Stiftung team which has consistently supported us with the launch and exhibition over the last seven years. Thank you all!
