Foreword
2018 marks nine (9) consecutive years since Nani Croze (Kitengela Glass Art founder) and a voluntary team of art enthusiasts gave life in 2010 to the first edition of Nani’s brainchild – the Kenya Arts Diary (KAD), which flew off bookstore shelves and sold out. The subsequent editions – each a collection of over 60 works of art – repeatedly sold out and after three annual editions, the KAD became a series while the Nani-led team got inspired to advance the project to feature an annual arts exhibition and launch event of the arts diary. The arts exhibition comprises most of the pieces featured in the diary edition.

The 2019 KAD is the 9th in the series and the demand to be featured in the diary has remained inestimably high with over 600 established and upcoming artists included over the years; and numerous art centers also featured to date. The artists’ short biographies and works are a reflection of the region’s diverse arts scenery and the realities of their surroundings. The entries go through an intense selection process for publication while adverts are sourced to finance the production and partly to fund the residency for one or two upcoming artists at Kitengela Glass Art Studios. Of the initial team lead by Nani Croze, Dr. Eric Krystall and Margaretta wa Gacheru have held on and we acknowledge their tireless efforts and contributions in time and skills in putting the publication together. We also thank Diana Maigwa (Stormsky Graphics) and Kul Bakhoo (Kul Graphics) for their sustained marketing and printing support, respectively. Thanks to volunteers and photographers David Gottlieb, Lyne Were, Anastasia Mirzoyants and Eric Gitonga.

Nani says, “I thank you all past and present supporters and team members not mentioned herein for your invaluable contributions throughout this arts journey.” We thank Dion Koigi and Irene Ikomu (both of Heinrich Boell Foundation) for their contribution; and the Heinrich Boell Foundation for consistently supporting the launch and arts exhibition since 2013.
