The Kenya Arts Diary 2017
Foreword
In 2010 a few volunteers interested in the art scene in Kenya and led by Nani Croze, selected over 60 works of art created by artists and sculptors living and working in Kenya. These works were photographed and published in a diary form. The diary was an immense success and sold out. This inspired the team to assemble and publish the Diary for each successive year. We now present the 7th Kenya Arts Diary, again showcasing the burgeoning creativity of up-coming and established East African artists.
The short biographies of the artists, which accompany their works, reflect the diverse visions which drive their creativity. The bios aim to illuminate the wide range of the artists’ concerns, including the realities of their lives and their communities both in realistic and abstract terms.
We also wish to note the surge of new galleries and art centers which are being established in Nairobi to exhibit and market the ever-increasing works of the numbers of young artists.
The accumulation of over 500 artistic works illustrated in the seven diaries together form a remarkable catalogue of East African art. Copies of some of the previous issues of the diary are still available and can be purchased at Kitengela Glass Research and Training Trust.
The team responsible for this year’s diary remain much the same as last year. Margaretta wa Gacheru, Nani Croze, Diana Maigwa, Lyne Were and Eric Krystall. Our partners since 2010, Kul Graphics, have once again produced a diary worthy of the art works displayed. We thank them for this and for their wise advise, support, efficiency and professional excellence.
